Performance limits of the three MEMS inertial energy generator transduction types

چکیده
In this paper, trends from the last 10 years of inertial micro-generator literature are investigated and it is shown that, although current generator designs are still operating well below their maximum power, there has been a significant improvement with time. Whilst no clear conclusions could be drawn from reported fabricated devices with respect to preferred transducer technology, this paper presents operating charts for inertial micro-generators which identify optimal operating modes for different frequencies and normalized generator sizes, and allows comparison of the different transduction mechanisms as these parameters vary. It is shown that piezoelectric generators have a wider operating range at low frequency than electromagnetic generators, but as generator dimensions increase, the frequency to which piezoelectric transducers outperform electromagnetic transducers decreases. متن کاملPower Processing Circuits for Mems Inertial Energy Scavengers
Inertial energy scavengers are self-contained devices which generate power from ambient motion, by electrically damping the internal motion of a suspended proof mass. There are significant challenges in converting the power generated from such devices to useable form, particularly in micro-engineered variants. This paper presents approaches to this power conversion requirement, with emphasis on...
متن کاملKinetic Energy Harvesting
This paper reviews kinetic energy harvesting as a potential localised power supply for wireless applications. Harvesting devices are typically implemented as resonant devices of which the power output depends upon the size of the inertial mass, the frequency and amplitude of the driving vibrations, the maximum available mass displacement and the damping. Three transduction mechanisms are curren...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis of a Novel Three-phase Axial Flux Switching Permanent Magnet Generator with Overlapping Concentrated Winding
This paper proposes a novel axial flux switching permanent magnet generator for small wind turbine applications. Surface mounted axial flux switching permanent magnet (SMAFSPM) machine is a new type of these machines that is introduced in this paper. One of the most important challenges in optimal designing of this kind of machines, is ease of construction and maintenance. One of the main featu...
متن کاملMems Inertial Power Generators for Biomedical Applications
An inertial vibration scavenging micro-generator is described which is suitable for biomedical applications. MEMS fabrication techniques have been used to construct a variable capacitor having one moving plate on which a proof mass is attached. Energy is extracted when the plates separate at constant charge. This device is non-resonant, so can operate over a wide range of excitation frequencies...
